Ammonia Combustion Meeting
Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel having great potentials for decarbonizing the energy, industrial and transportation sectors. Large scale use of energy conversion systems exploiting ammonia combustion poses unique challenges and many relevant research opportunities. To address those challenges and promote the exchange among researchers active in the field the First Ammonia Combustion Meeting has been organized. The meeting will feature invited talks from experts of academia and industry, presenting a review of the state-of-the-art on different aspects of ammonia combustion in the field, and highlight the key challenges for the community to tackle. The invited talks will be followed by a panel discussion. A proactive role from attendees will be solicited and is warmly welcomed. During the meeting the following topics will be discussed: Ammonia oxidation kinetics Laminar flames and fundamental combustion properties Canonical turbulent flames MILD combustion Laboratory scale industrial burners Internal Combustion Engines However, according to the aim of maximizing discussion opportunity among the participants, free discussions and exchanges on every aspect of ammonia usage as energy carriers are welcome. The ultimate challenge of the meeting is to identify and consolidate common interests around selected topics, case studies, and issues that will be pursued after the meeting in a synergistic and collaborative effort for a swift and effective ammonia utilization in combustion based systems.

KAUST Research Conference on Extreme Bandwidth Communication: From mmWave, THz to Optical Bands
KAUST Research Conference on Extreme Bandwidth Communication: From mmWave, THz to Optical Bands ‌ The technological evolution has led to the current high-performing wireless communication systems that we use on a daily basis. However, coping with the increasing demand is becoming more and more challenging, especially since we are approaching the limits of what can be done with the available resources. One of these resources is bandwidth. This spectrum scarcity problem has motivated researchers to explore new frequencies for wireless communications. Due to this reason, the upper radio-frequency (RF) spectrum, from mmWave and THz to optical bands, is being pursued, which is termed as “Extreme Bandwidth Communication”. This conference brings world experts and the brightest minds from academia and industry to present the latest trends, challenges, results, and opportunities in the field of extreme bandwidth communication.

ML Hub Seminar Series
The Machine Learning Hub @ KAUST is designed to be the one-stop-shop for machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) at KAUST. It is an informal forum for exchanging ideas in these areas, including (but not limited to) theoretical foundations, systems, tools, and applications. It will be providing several offerings to the KAUST community interested in ML and AI, including a regular seminar series where new research in the field is presented, an online social forum dedicated to AI and ML discussions, announcements, brainstorming, collaborations, and hands-on activities (e.g. tutorials/workshops and hackathons) to bolster the growing need for ML and AI education/training on campus. For more details, please visit ml.kaust.edu.sa. This talk will serve as the first installment in the seminar series, during which a more detailed overview of The Hub will be presented. All who are interested in ML and AI on campus are invited to join.

The Ocean Soundscape Of The Anthropocene
The underwater ocean soundscape is a critical but understudied habitat feature directly affecting marine animals that rely on sound. However, with increasing human activity the ocean has become noisier. This is especially true with the advent of submarine construction and seismic exploration, and the ever-increasing noise produced by shipping and other human activities. Noise travels much further through water than air and thus has the capacity to have more widespread effects on marine life, especially those that have evolved to use sound to communicate, locate prey and habitats, and detect risks. In this workshop, we will bring together researchers measuring, describing, and comparing soundscapes in marine ecosystems across the world. The speakers will address questions such as: How have soundscapes changed in the Anthropocene, particularly the role of the anthrophony? Is the biophony, and thus most animal communication, potentially masked by anthropogenic noise? Are there spatial (tropical vs temperate vs polar, freshwater vs marine, coastal vs offshore) and temporal (diel, seasonal) differences in the dominance of noise? Is acoustic complexity related to marine biodiversity? What can we learn from relatively undisturbed ecosystems about the effects of noise, and are there conservation strategies to mitigate such negative effects?

WEP 2020 - Personalized Medicine
About the theme 'Personalized Medicine' Personalized Medicine Personalized medicine is the natural progression of medicine and science, that aims at tailoring practices, interactions, and medicine to the individual patient. We must work to ensure that the best medicine is provided to the correct patient for treating and potentially preventing critical illnesses. How is personalized medicine going to impact your personal life? WEP 2020 will focus on the following broad areas: The future of medicine: how can we leverage current science and technology to implement customized treatments, drugs, applications, and biotechnology? The use of personalized medicine and genetic information in security, biology, AI, technology, science. The economic impact of personalized medicine and technology and how does it fit in the vision 2030. The impact of culture, ethics, and the environment on personal health. New trends on well-being and lifestyle.

WEP 2022 RESILIENCE
RESILIENCE It’s the ability to withstand adversity—to weather challenges, setbacks, and unforeseen circumstances. The global pandemic has tested the resilience of people and systems the world over. But humanity has proven resilient in a time of exceptional adversity. And so it is with cautious optimism that the theme for WEP 2022 is Resilience. WEP 2022 will explore tipping points—stress events such as climate change, pandemic, resource shortage, rapid population growth, and more. What makes tipping points happen? How can we predict when they will occur? And how can we adapt, recalibrate and bounce back stronger? We hope that the theme “Resilience” would provide an approach for the global community, regardless of our perspectives and background, to come together in a collaborative manner and address the various adversities.
